When researching and calculating the amount of water usage in my household, I was shocked at how much unnecessary water usage there is, how much can be prevented, as well as how much my household is efficient with water usage. For example the Home Water Works water calculator shows that my household uses 37,088 gallons per year and by dividing that by 365 days a year we average about 101 gallons/day per person. The average usage is about 246 gallons per day in the U.S. depending on the amount of people in the household. I would say my household in that aspect is doing really well by trying to conserve the amount of water usage. The City of Bellingham Washington was the second water calculator I used and was able to give me a sufficient amount of data referring to the amount of gallons per day a person uses and incorporate that data for a household of 3. The amount of water usage in a day is 1,707 gallons per day and dividing that by 3 people in one household equals out to 569 gallons per person. Of course the one thing to keep in mind is the insufficient data for every water calculator because each website is different. Lastly, Southwest Florida Water Management District was the final water calculator I used to calculate the last water usage for the amount of gallons per person a day. This water calculator was able to calculate daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly the amount of water used. I went ahead and divided the daily 171 gallons by 3 referring to the amount of people in the household which totaled up to 57 gallons per day. Of course the different water calculators can be insufficient in data depending on how it is calculated by the actual website, but that does not defeat the purpose of how carelessly millions of people around the world don't consume the amount of water they use daily. Overall this activity taught me not only the mathematical abilities to calculate water percentage, but it also taught me on how to conserve the amount of water being used daily.
